The Leatherman Skeletool CX is an excellent multi-tool, it is lightweight, compact and it might fulfill all of your needs. It was built with to have the fundamental tools but it is awesome because of that. Also, users consider it to be a minimalistic tool, of course, because of its weight and size. It is no wonder that the Skeletool tools are excellent for carrying them every day. Having them in your pocket saves time and energy – you won’t have to go back and get a knife or pliers. Leatherman’s Skeletool CX is also great for the office, home or even vacation – a lot of people forget to carry can openers or a wood cutting saw. Because we wanted to research and find out more about it, we wrote this Leatherman Skeletool CX review. You’ll also see why it made our list of best multi tools.
Namely, Leatherman presented three different versions of the Skeletool multi-tool – the CX version, the basic model and the SX one which has a diamond coated file.

If you’ve owned another Skeletool in your life, you would know why you would like the Skeletool CX better. The main difference between those two is basically what will make your life easier. The second one has a stainless steel blade alloy, a better blade style, and a very cool metal finish styling. Even though the handle insert is made from carbon fiber, it is still a great multi-tool.
Comfort and function
It is clear that Skeletool CX is considerably comfortable and easy to use. Although the handles aren’t symmetrical, they can be held either way. However, when the pliers are held too far down the screwdriver bit tip can poke the palm of the user.
Compared to other Leatherman products such as the Wave, the Skeletool CX’s pliers are somewhat smaller. Still, they are large enough and definitely strong enough for almost every purpose. Another benefit from this is the fact that they can be easily used in smaller working environments and tight spaces.
Also, when we are talking about the pliers it is safe to mention that the soft and hard wire cutters are phenomenal too. They cut what they need to, and they do the job perfectly.
The knife blade
Originally, the Skeletool was equipped with a plain edge blade. The Skeletool CX was equipped with a combination of a partially serrated blade. However, things were changed around the year of 2010. Now, the knife blade can be used single-handedly. It can be deployed with a thumb hole and it locks that way once deployed. This ensures safety and protection from unwanted injuries and movements. Also, it can be closed by using only one hand too. Also, if you are one of those owners who like to sharpen the blade, you can do this too. Of course, it would require extra work and the right equipment.
The serrated blades and the partially serrated blades are an excellent choice if your activities involve cutting fibrous materials like a branch or rope. You can do this with a plain edge blade too but it would take more time. Generally, the plain edge blades have a cleaner cut than the serrated blades.
Ultimately, the CX’s blade is an excellent choice. This is only enhanced by the fact that Leatherman is known for having high-quality knives.
Previously, in this Leatherman Skeletool CX review, we mentioned that the knife blade is made of 154CM stainless steel. These are recognized to be an excellent quality all-around blades. It is corrosion resistant and it has the strength for almost all of your needs. If we compare them to lesser steels, we would observe that these knives stay sharper for a greater amount of time and they are a lot easier to sharpen.
The screwdriver bit holder
Another great thing you can see about the Skeletool CX is the fact that it is equipped with the exact same type of removable bit holder like Leatherman’s Charge, Wave, and the Surge multi-tools. Also, they have the same bit holder as some of Leatherman’s pocket knives too. Basically, this would mean that you will be able to use it with all of the same accessories and bits. Moreover, the bit holder is equipped with an active spring-loaded mechanism for locking. This would save you the trouble of losing bits and worrying about it.
The extra bit compartment
Another great thing that we would like to mention in our Leatherman Skeletool CX review is the fact that this multi-tool has an extra bit which tucks away into a spot within the handle. It fits securely and it can be effortlessly retrieved with a small push of a nail or fingertip.
The Carabiner, bottle opener, and pocket clip
The idea of the carabiner is excellent regardless of how many people use it. It is excellent to have it and it doesn’t add weight to the tool at all. Moreover, the pocket clip is curved which would prevent from having it in your pocket at all times without discomfort. Also, it can be attached to the belt. The clip is small but it is definitely secure when somebody carries it this way. Also, you can clip another object to the carabiner of the Skeletool CX.
The Carbon fiber and DLC coating
Another nice touch on Leatherman’s Skeletool CX is the fact that it has a carbon fiber insert. Compared to the regular Skeletool which has an aluminum insert, this is a great improvement. Additionally, it has a DLC finish in some parts. This diamond-like coating is both functional and decorative. It is meant to be an improvement and to help the tool resist scratches.
Regardless of other things, the Skeletool CX is excellent for those who want to save bulk and weight. It is highly functional and a great choice for almost every needs a person can have. It is compact, it doesn’t weight a lot and more importantly, it is just what any person needs in their pocket at all times. We hope that our Leatherman Skeletool CX review has given you the information you needed about this awesome multi-tool.
